Alfama Films is delighted to be supporting Portuguese cinema internationally!
Two new films have been announced in the official selection of the 47th São Paulo International Film Festival, which runs from 19 October to 1 November 2023. Eduardo Brito's debut film THE SIBYL in the New Filmmakers section and Tiago Guedes' latest film DIALOGUES AFTER THE END in the International Perspective section.
The Sibyl, written and directed by Eduardo Brito, is a film adaptation of Agustina Bessa-Luís's landmark novel about the complex relationship between a young writer and her aunt, two strong women inspired by real people living in northern Portugal in the mid-20th century. The film was released in Portuguese cinemas on 12 October, in dozens of cinemas from the north to the south of the country, bringing to a close the centenary celebrations of the writer.
Maria João Pinho and Joana Ribeiro play the main characters, accompanied by Raimundo Cosme, Simão Cayatte, Sandra Faleiro, João Pedro Vaz, Diana Sá, Emília Silvestre, Ricardo Vaz Trindade, Marcello Urgeghe and Ana Padrão, among others.
In Dialogues after the end, Tiago Guedes takes as his starting point six of the dialogues written by Cesare Pavese in Dialogues avec Leucó, eloquent and fragile at the same time, between gods, demigods, heroes and other humanised pagan figures, who question contemporary society through the imagery of Greek myths. Out of a given time and place, and therefore, like the myths, still relevant today.
Based on a script by Tiago Guedes in partnership with João Pedro Vaz, these dialogues are performed by a large cast including João Pedro Mamede, Maria do Céu Ribeiro, Isabel Abreu, Beatriz Maia, João Estima, Adriano Luz, Luís Araújo, Rita Cabaço, Joana Ribeiro, Miguel Borges, Sofia Dias and João Pedro Vaz.
