Paulo Branco honored at the Cinémathèque française in 2021

We are pleased and honored to announce that La Cinémathèque française will pay tribute to the career of Paulo Branco from February 10 to 21, 2021.

« We owe to this inspired and daring producer, who started out as a programmer and theater operator in Paris, the emergence of a major part of cinematographic modernity in Europe since the end of the 1970s. Paulo Branco has indeed enabled the hatch of most of the most essential cinema artists of this period, from the Portuguese Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa or João César Monteiro, to the Chilean Raoul Ruiz or the Lithuanian Sharunas Bartas. He has also produced some of the most important films by Chantal Akerman and Werner Schroeter. Several directors representative of a whole generation of French filmmakers owe their debuts to him: Olivier Assayas, Christophe Honoré, Laurence Ferreira Barbosa, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Mathieu Amalric and many others. Paulo Branco, or film production as an adventure and as an art. »

Exceptionally, the one to whom the French Cinémathèque dedicated in 1992, a tribute entitled “Bravo Branco” is the only independent producer to have been celebrated twice by the Cinémathèque.
