Born in Kitakyushu in 1964, Shinji is considered as a major director of the japanese “Nouvelle Vague”.
He made his debut as film director with Helpless (1996). From 2000, his international carreer grows up. Eureka in competition at Cannes wins the Prize of the Ecumenial Jury. One year later, Desert Moon is selected too for the Palme d’Or.
From 2001 to 2011. Aoyama directs various movies whose Sad Vacation exhibited at the 64th Venice International Film Festival.
In paralell to his director work, he writes book. Besides, he novelizes his own film Eureka which is rewarded by the Critic.
